Round Up, the most widely used herbicide in the country, is sprayed on everything and ends up in our air and water. Much of our produce today is “Round Up Ready” meaning it is has been genetically modified (GMO) to withstand all the Round Up applications so that the plant thrives while weeds and pests die. Herbicides can affect defense enzymes our bodies used to keep us healthy. Round up also reduces a plants ability to take up vital micronutrients that humans require for survival.
How can you minimize your exposure? Buy organic when possible, and washer produce thoroughly! Even organic fruits and vegetables might contain traces of pesticides on their skins. I found this very upsetting. Did you know that to be certified organic you only need a distance of 25 feet from your neighbors pesticide sprayed field to your organic field! Appalling! Know your farmer! Visit their farms!
